Remember when we were kids and at first it was easy to make friends, probably in grade school but as time went by and we entered our teenage years and it wasn't so easy? Maybe because we changed cities or schools or we just were a little shy. Things don't change much as we grow older. Maybe it's a new job you're taking or a new city you've moved to. You have to kind of start over. It can be nerve racking.
This is my story......
So after leaving the big city ofBrampton where I had my friends that I associated with at the hall, we moved to the big city of Grand Valley . Talk about night & day. I'm a city girl who moved to the country. Yes, you heard me, country. I don't mean suburbs, I mean country. Where your neighbour is a cow, you have a well and your house is heated by oil not gas. If you know me, your mouth probably dropped. Big change! Not to mention that we had no friends at the hall(not counting the Madeira 's).
It was so weird. Yes, people were friendly but not your friends. They didn't know you. You are the outsider. They have their friends, groups, clicks. Now I have to fit in, somehow. Believe it or not, I do get shy. Yes, it's true, I'm quite the out-going, out- spoken girl but in a new element, I find it truly hard. Not that I don't have anything to say-that would be a first. But because I'm not sure what to say. What do I have in common with these people? What if they don't like me? Or me them?
I must admit it was hard to move & make friends. So I sat there & people watched. Fascinating! You learn a lot just by watching. Who interacts with who, where the groups are and for me, where to start.
So I begin with picking a few to socialize with. Seemed like a nice little group of women. Off to Swiss Chalet we went. To my surprise, it worked. I mean the group clicked. So much so that it stuck. They got to know me & vice versa. Since then, we've had a few girl's night. We eat, drink, go to the movies, hang out... It's a great group. We don't always all get to make it but we always have a good time. The stories are always good, we learn new things about each other and the laughs are great!
There have been a few new additions to this little group. I say welcome. Don't be shy, jump right in and enjoy. Life changes often but sometimes change is good and it may take a little adjusting here & there, trust me I know.
So, here's to my new friends, who’s company I enjoy, where I can laugh and have a good time and they understand that I'm still a city girl looking for those high -heeled rubber boots to wear in the country.
Here's to friendship!
