Here's the scoop: European people do not eat ham as a source of dinner. Not roasted, not spirial, not pecan encrusted, not even baked. Especially not with fruit on it. Try serving that to a european and they'll think you're serving cold cuts. Doesn't matter how you dress it or serve it, it's ham.
I'm not saying it's bad. Just saying that it's not a european thing. Of course, we do associate Canadians with ham just like Italians with pasta & Portuguese with fish. Which doesn't mean thats what everybody eats all the time but every conversation that I am in, involving a party, fancy dinner etc I hear some say," I'll bring a ham or I made a ham." LOL!
Please don't get me wrong, if thats part of your heritage I get it. But please don't make a face when I talk about bbq sardines. Not canned sardines. Fresh on the bbq. Thats our thing. Can and fresh are not the same. Some people love the canned sardines but will not try the bbq'd ones. Really? Why? Yes they smell fishy(no pun intended) but they are sooo much better than cans. Moist, white meat, bbq flavour, served with cooked potatoes drizzled with olive oil, a lettuce salad & fresh corn bread. Yummy! Thats a traditional portuguese plate!
Yes, of course I don't expect you all to try it, I understand. But you do eat sushi, some of you of course. What about calamari? Ooohh, when you say it like that it sounds so much better than squid. But I hate to tell you, thats what it is...squid. Of course, there are may ways to eat that too. One of my favourites,is stuffed squid(with rice, chorico, green peppers). Its a lot of work but amazng.
There are so many things that every culture has that sometimes make you wonder. Whether its, moose meat(you know who you are) or "ham" or sardines the food possibilities are endless. Now I'm not saying mine is better than yours or vice a versa. I'm just simply saying that cultures vary.
So, having said all that, I will be having a ham dinner very soon. I am not cooking it myself but have been invited for ham dinner. Whats the worst that can happen, I don't like it and have to wait for dessert? I will try most things once.
So who wants to have some bbq sardines?
